At least 34 people were killed and around 117 others were injured while two Russian ballistic missiles hit the Ukrainian city north of Sumy. Kyiv says it is the second large -scale attack to win civil life in the space of a week.
The missiles struck on Sunday while people met to celebrate twigs on Sunday – Sunday before Easter in which Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem.
The attacks were carried out in the morning, the officials saying that the first of the missiles struck around 10:15 am local time. The images of the site showed lines of black body bags on the side of the road, while more bodies have been seen wrapped in aluminum blankets among the debris.
Video sequences have also shown that firefighters fighting to turn off car shells burned among the rubble of damaged buildings.
The dead included two children, said the emergency service of the State of Ukraine in a statement. 15 other children were also injured, to various degrees. Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that among these children was a toddler – a newborn born in 2025 – while he was detailing the horrible attack.
“The first hit a building – one of the university buildings. The second exploded practically on the street. 117 people were injured, including children, including a girl born in 2025,” said Zelenskyy.
The Ukrainian chief criticized Russia for what he called an odious attack targeting civilians.
“The strike struck the city center on twice on Sundays. Only a dirty foam can act like that.”
Zelenskyy says that the attack comes only a few days after the brand's brand of Russia's refusal of an unconditional 30-day ceasefire offered in the United States-agreed by Ukraine on March 11. He regularly accused Moscow of blocking more concessions, questioning their seriousness about peace.
“They are not afraid. And that is precisely why (they use) ballistic missiles. This is why every night there are a hundred strike drones, most of them Shaheds (Strike Drones) which target ordinary Ukrainian cities,” added Zelenskyy.
He also called for a global response to the attack, claiming that “the only pressure, only decisive action”, would stop attacks such as Sunday strikes to undermine the efforts to end the war.
The attack on Sumy followed a fatal strike of missiles on April 4 on the hometown of Zelenskyy, Kryvyi Rih, who killed around twenty people, including nine children.
He also one day came after the diplomats of Russia and Ukraine accused each other of having violated a provisional agreement in the United States to suspend strikes on energy infrastructure, highlighting the challenges of negotiations from the end of the more than three years.
