Like us reported In December, American Single Malt is now officially recognized whiskey category. It's great news For producers who have just started to dive their toes in this unique mind basin, but the fact is that many craft distilleries have been there for decades. One of them is Whiskey to the westA distillery that made the American single malt for 20 years. The latest version was completed in robust beer barrels, part of an increasing number of whiskeys that obtain this type of secondary maturation.
Many members of Whiskey to the west The team has roots in brewing, and in fact the distillery begins to produce each whiskey by stirring an American beer using water, malted barley and brewer's yeast. The beer of the distiller, as we know at that time, is then double distilled in fixed potatoes in pots and aged in new barrels of charred and grilled American oak (the same type which are used for bourbon), before sometimes a secondary maturation. Basic programming whiskey is not over, but the robust expression of the barrel has been available for almost a decade, a whiskey that has received a one -year finish in coarse barrels from local breweries.
This new whiskey differs from the basic expression in basic barrels in several ways. According to Master Blender Miles Munroe, Westward X Fort George Brewery Stout Cask is a “double muffled” expression. This means that the whiskey was finished for the first time in big drain barrels, then some of them were placed in Stout Matryoshka barrels from the local Brasserie Fort George. The finishing process, according to the distillery, lasted between 11 months and four years according to a barrel. The result is a whiskey at 115 (57.5% ABV) which, according to official tasting notes, has flavors such as dark chocolate, blueberries, orange skin, mandarins, grilled nuts, hazelnuts and vanilla pod on the palate.
Westward is not the only distillery finishing its American single in beer barrels. Virginia Distillery Co. Launched the Brewer's Coalition Fall series last fall with whiskeys finished in barrels previously used by Oie Island Brewery, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, and, more recently, boulevard Brewing Co. Properte Stout Cask. Last year, Westland In Seattle, launched a Finish American Single Malt Whiskey beer that had aged in six types of beer barrels, and a few years ago, Colorado Distillery Stranahan Released the Osopher which was finished in barrels of flying brasserie (there are also exclusives of distillery finished in beer barrels).
