The fighting had been the worst between the former enemies of South Asia in almost three decades and threatened to burst into a large -scale war in one of the most volatile and most densely populated regions in the world.
There were brief fears that nuclear arsenals could come into play while the Pakistani army said that a higher body supervising its nuclear weapons would come together.
But the Minister of Defense said that no meeting of this type was planned, a few hours after a night of heavy fighting in which the two countries targeted the military bases of the other and the combined assessment of civilian deaths increased to 66.
“Pakistan and India have agreed with an immediate effect,” said Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on X. said.
“Pakistan has always sought peace and security in the region, without compromising its sovereignty and its territorial integrity!”
The Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the military leaders of the two countries had spoken and agreed that all the fights would stop at 5 pm, Indian hour (1130 GMT), without using the word “ceasefire”.
US President Donald Trump posted: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am happy to announce that India and Pakistan have accepted a complete and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to the two countries for having used common sense and great intelligence.”
