At 6:07 pm Thursday, White Smoke relieved the Sistine Chapel chimney and the bells of the Saint-Pierre basilica rang, announcing the election of the 267th Pope on the second day of the conclave.
A wave of emotion swept the crowd of Saint-Pierre while tens of thousands applauded, chant “Viva il papa!”, And wave flags from all over the world. The priests met and the nuns were crying while all eyes turned to the Loggia of the basilica, where the new Pope should appear.
White smoke indicates that at least 89 of the 133 cardinal voters agreed on a successor to Pope Francis. The words “Habemus Papam!” Will soon be echoed with the balcony, followed by the name of the new church chief.
