Russia marks the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany during the Second World War with a military parade on the Red Square in Moscow.
The event is followed by President Vladimir Putin as well as several foreign leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva.
Few other countries mark the end of the Second World War with the same degree of brass band as Russia, for which victory over Nazi Germany 80 years ago remains a source of immense pride and a decisive moment in history.
Victory day, celebrated on May 9, is the most important secular vacation in Russia, reflecting its sacrifice in wartime.
But it is also used by the Kremlin to stimulate patriotism and regain the prestige of superpower it lost when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
