The man, named Lorenz A., would have been sprayed with irritating gas before the police opened fire, unloading at least four shots.
The first reports suggesting that “he had threatened the police with a knife” was not supported. The authorities now say that it is not clear if the police thought that the young black man was armed at the time.
An autopsy confirmed that Lorenz A. had been killed from behind, which raises other questions about the use of force. “The results of the autopsy raise serious questions and devastating allegations which must be unforgivatedly answered,” said Lower Saxony, Daniela Behrens.
A large demonstration is scheduled for April 25, the community calling for total transparency and an in -depth overhaul of police tactics. The case sparked a new debate on racial prejudices and the police responsibility in Germany.
