Prévost, 69, who holds American and Peruvian citizenship, also serves as a pontifical commission for Latin America, where almost 40% of world Catholics reside.
He became the newly appointed Head of the Roman Catholic Church Thursday, after more than two -thirds of the cardinals voted to succeed the late Francis.
