Washington: The United States has imposed new sanctions related to Myanmar on Monday (May 5) targeting a war lord, his two sons and the militia he leads to facilitate cyber-escroqueries targeting the Americans, the trafficking in human beings and the cross-border smuggling, said the Treasury Department.
The sanctions were imposed on the national army of Karen, saw Chit Thu and his two sons, saw Htoo Eh Moo and seen Chit Chit, the department said in a statement.
Led by Saw Chit Thu, the Karen national army has long controlled a region at the Thai border-Burme, which houses several cyber-arnaque unions, according to the press release.
The border town of Myawaddy, where KNA has its headquarters, has become a key battlefield as troops of the Junta Manager of Myanmar and rebels are jostling for the control of the outpost which manages more than $ 1 billion of border trade each year.
“Cyber-Arnaque operations, such as those led by KNA, generate billions of income for criminal pivots and their partners, while depriving the victims of their hard-won economies and the feeling of security,” said assistant secretary Michael Faulkender.
“The Treasury undertakes to use all the tools available to disrupt these networks and hold responsible those who seek to take advantage of these criminal diets.”
The links of Chit Thu with the military leaders of Myanmar, as evidenced by an honorary title for “exceptional performance” which was given to him by the chief of the Junta, General Min Aung Hlaing in November 2022, helped him build his position.
