Dhaka: Thousands of people joined Friday, May 9, outside the residence of the acting leader in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, demanding that he prohibit the former political party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Yunus, 84, has led an interim government since Hasina was overthrown by mass demonstrations led by students In August 2024 and fled in exile while the crowd stormed its palate.
Friday's rally came after the sudden departure of Abdul Hamid, a former leader of the Awami League of Hasina, Bangladesh early Thursday.
A crowd, mainly made up of young people, had started to come together in front of the Yunus residence on Thursday evening.
Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of Newly trained national citizen partysaid the demonstration would continue until their requests are satisfied.
“Sheikh Hasina stole the people of Bangladesh with their democratic rights. She manipulated the system to prevent any real opposition from participating in the elections,” said Kamrul.
“We have seen Abdul Hamid leave the country safely. The actions of certain advisers are very suspicious. The delay in justice seems to be part of a wider plan to bring the fallen dictator and his party,” he added.
