“Implicit warning”
The ASEAN member, Vietnam, a manufacturing power, was slapped with 46% of prices and Cambodia – a large producer of low -cost clothing for major Western brands – was 49% struck.
Malaysia, the third economy of Southeast Asia, was struck by a rate of 24%.
The prices have been interrupted for 90 days, but Trump said that no country was “won”.
“At the regional level, XI is likely to frame China as a partner in stability and development, not as a hegemon,” said Khoo.
“At the same time, his message carries an implicit warning, that is to say: do not leave the prices or alliances of Washington undermined the regional cohesion of Asia,” she said.
Oh Ei Sun of the Pacific Research Center of Malaysia Think Tank, said that Xi's visit was like “a group of friends huddling together for a heat against hard time”.
XI said on Tuesday when he arrived that he hoped that his visit will inaugurate another “50 years of gold” in China-Malais relations.
“I am convinced that with our joint efforts, it will be a successful visit,” said Xi in a statement published by the Chinese Embassy of Kuala Lumpur.
China and Malaysia celebrated their 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year and enjoyed solid commercial ties, although Malaysia demands parts of the Southern China Sea during which Beijing marked out the sovereignty almost with gout.
China has been the largest trading partner in Malaysia for 16 consecutive years, the total trade between the two countries representing 16.8% of the world's Malaysian trade last year, according to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
XI swore in an opinion article published in the Journal The Star in Malaysia on Tuesday that China will work with the countries of Southeast Asia to fight protectionism and maintain the stable global supply chains.
“We have to maintain the multilateral trade system, keep the industrial channels and supply global and maintain an international openness and cooperation environment,” said Xi.
Xi will go to Cambodia on Thursday, one of the most common allies in Southeast Asian China and where Beijing has extended its influence in recent years.
