“Serious risk”
The attack on Tuesday took place as tourist appreciated quiet mountain views on the popular Pahalgam site, when armed men broke out with rated forests and crowds with automatic weapons.
Indian Minister of Defense, Rajnath Singh, promised a quick response on Wednesday.
“The officials and behind such an act will soon hear our response, noisy and clear,” said Singh in a speech in New Delhi.
“We don't just reach the people who led the attack. We will also contact those who have planned this behind the scenes of our land.”
No group has claimed the responsibility of the attack in the Muslim majority region where the rebels have led an insurrection since 1989 – seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan.
Wednesday evening, the Indian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vikram Misri, read a series of actions against Pakistan.
This includes the suspension of the Industrial Water Treaty in 1960 to share the critical water of the tributaries of the Himalayas “until Pakistan abjure in a credible and irrevocably (reject) support for cross -border terrorism,” said journalists in New Delhi.
It also includes the closure of the border crossing of the continent and several reductions in diplomatic staff, in particular by removing several Indian employees from Islamabad and by ordering the Maison des Pakistanis.
Analyst Michael Kugelman said that the attack posed a “very serious risk of a new crisis between India and Pakistan, and probably the most serious risk of crisis since the brief military conflict that occurred in 2019”.
