Louisville, Ky. – The victory of the Kentucky derby of sovereignty in the mud at Churchill Downs aroused the curiosity of knowing whether the colt can rely on his signature victory on a surface possibly drier and faster on the triple crown trail.
The question is now whether this test will come sooner or later.
The coach of the renowned temple Bill Mott did not look like someone prepared sovereignty for a trip to Baltimore to run in the 150th Preakness Stakes on May 17 at the Pimlico Race Race, offering a cautious approach. He mentioned a short break in the right front patron of the horse, probably resulting from heels with another horse out of the door, but said that it was not serious.
“The great thing about the triple crown is that few horses can do it,” said Mott, referring to American Pharoah in 2015 and justifies in 2018. “I think it is a big strong horse and if you will never watch one and say, ok, if it is your goal and the goal of the owner, it is always in the best interest of the horse. But we are going to look long.”
The immediate future for horses which ended just behind sovereignty or which completely jumped the derby also remained muddy.
The double trainer with triple crown Bob Baffert returned to Churchill Downs after a suspension of four years with two entries, but scratched the winner of the Wood Memorial Rodriguez, pointing to the Preakness rather than on Citizen Bull, which finished 15th. Compatriot Todd Plotcher scratched his only large derby participant. There is also a large group of hope that won derby points during the qualification and could try other tripple crown stops.
The Preakness is the shortest race at 1 3/16 mile, but its two -week rapid reversal of the 1/4 Mile derby often gives a break for coaches and property groups. With the Belmont Stakes scheduled for June 7, five weeks after the derby and three weeks separated from Preakness, this race is considered by many as a favorite option.
This final gem of the triple crown, which takes place at the Saratoga race race in the North of New York for a second consecutive year, presents the same distance as the derby because of the shape of the track instead of its 1 1/2 traditional miles.
The redemption could be in order for the second Derby journalism, which did not succeed as a 3-1 favorite. Coach Michael McCarthy said in a press release that “we have no complaints” and praised the efforts of his foal to join the head briefly before sovereignty, the third choice of 7-1, exceeded it in the section and won by 1 1/2 length.
“With a field of this size in a race like this, this is the trip,” said McCarthy. “It didn't quite work as we hoped, but he ran a good race against a good horse.”
Baeza finished third, but coach John Shirreffs underlined the Belmont for his horse based in California. The final gambit in charge of the last to finish fourth among 19 horsepower, and coach Brad Cox said: “This gives us confidence to try a rapid dirt area in the future.”
Michael Banahan, representative of the owner group of Mott and Godolphin LLC, expressed the same faith in sovereignty for his next step.
The most recent derby champion appeared briefly on the hangar row for the media and spectators, and its managers felt good in the initial state of the horse. They plan to watch him the next few days before making a decision on the immediate part of his bright future.
“We are just doing the right thing for the horse, which he has to do,” said Banahan. “He has a big year, I hope to continue on the road here. There are a lot of beautiful races that you would also like to put on his CV. So we just do the right thing for him.”
