After Pope Francis' funeral in the presence of many world leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Palazzo Chigi.
The conversation between the two lasted just under an hour. According to a note published by Palazzo Chigi, during the talks, “the leaders reiterated their support for President Trump's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace, capable of guaranteeing a future of security, sovereignty and freedom for Ukraine”.
“Meloni has also expressed, on behalf of the government, its condolences for the victims of the recent Russian attacks, renewing its ceasefire business of these acts and highlighting the urgency of an immediate and unconditional cease-fire, as well as the need for a concrete commitment from Moscow at the start of a peace process,” continued.
The Prime Minister “welcomed Ukraine’s full preparation for an immediate ceasefire. It is now planned that Russia also demonstrates his desire to continue the peace,” concludes the note.
Meetings with other leaders
Earlier, Zelensky had private interviews inside the Saint-Pierre basilica with American president Donald Trump, as well as with the outgoing president of Elysé Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“Seeing Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky talk about peace at the funeral of the” Pope of Peace “has a huge meaning,” Meloni at Daily La Repubblica, calling him a “historic day”.
Zelensky and Starmer also had a bilateral meeting in the gardens of Villa Wolkonsky. A meeting between Zelensky and the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen was also planned.
