A federal judge in the United States said that he had found a likely cause to hold the administration of President Donald Trump in criminal contempt in court for having raped his orders to overthrow planes carrying deportees to El Salvador.
US district judge James E. Boasberg warned that he could send the case for prosecution if the administration does not “purge” his contempt.
Boasberg said the administration could do so by returning to American custody those who were sent to the prison of El Salvador in violation of his order so that they “can take advantage of their right to challenge their move”.
If the Ministry of Justice refuses to continue the case, Boasberg said that he would name another lawyer to continue contempt.
“The Constitution does not tolerate the voluntary disobedience of the judicial orders – in particular by the officials of a branch of coordinates who took the oath to maintain it,” wrote Boasberg.
The Trump administration said it would appeal.
In an article on social networks on X, the director of communications of the White House, Steven Cheung, wrote: “The president is 100% determined to ensure that the terrorists and illegal criminal migrants are no longer a threat to the Americans and their communities across the country”.
The case has become one of the most lively among several legal battles confronted with the Republican administration, which put it in direct conflict with the federal courts.
