A man has been charged in Greece to spy on spying and imprisonment awaiting the trial after having pretended to photograph and recorded military operations at the Alexandroupolis strategic port in the northeast of Greece.
The port serves as a key logistics center for American and NATO operations, facilitating the movement of military equipment and staff in support of the member states of Ukraine and NATO in Eastern Europe.
The man, who was not appointed, was arrested on April 29 in a joint operation by the police and the national intelligence service of Greece.
The authorities said that he “acted on behalf of another person” and had sent the recordings to this person using an encrypted messaging application, but provided no other details.
But the man's lawyer told court that he had not sent any classified information and that the photographs of NATO operations had already largely appeared in the media.
According to state television, quoting Greek officials from the law application, the suspect is a 59 -year -old Greek citizen born in Georgia and is the subject of a survey for potential links with Russian security services through contact in Lithuania.
Escorted by police officers, the suspect appeared before a magistrate in Alexandroupolis for a preliminary hearing earlier Friday.
The judicial authorities said that he had denied all the accusations, adding that no date of trial had been set.
