Spring is finally there, and we think it's time to get white wines out to associate with lighter meals. One of our favorite regions for aromatic whites is Alsace In the northeast corner of France and fortunately there are about 1,000 producers to choose. The best wines come from a narrow strip of 75 miles long which runs along the French side of the Rhine river with 51 Grand Cru vineyards located here which received an official status in 1975. The vineyards were historically planted on the steep slopes of the banks because it gives the vineyards an exposure to the maximum sun and excellent drainage.
The vines on the other side of the river are not in Alsace; They are planted in German soil, which is why so many names of family cellar as well as varieties cultivated in Alsace such as Riesling And Gewürztramin have Germanic rather than French. Pinot Gris can be the only exception because it is from France, but it is also cultivated in Germany. Alsace white wines are often called “aromatic white” because of their floral notes and spices in their bouquet which lead to stone and tropical fruits and flavors of vibrant citrus. For the most part, RieslingGewürztraminer and Pinot Gris d'Alsace are dry, but even those with higher residual sugar have lively acidity which prevents them from appearing too sweet. This brilliant acidity is also one of the reasons why these wines age so well; Far from being easy -to -drink whites intended to be consumed young, they will last a long time if they are stored properly and will bring joy to your palace in the years to come. You will note slightly older vintages among our choices; Although they drink well now, they still have a lot of life. Here are the seven best Alsace wines to buy now.
