Bangkok: The Thailand medical council suspended two doctors on Thursday, May 8 for allegedly allegedly linked to the treatment given to the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra after his return from exile.
Thaksin, 75, returned to Thailand in August 2023 after more than a decade abroad and was sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and abuse of power upon arrival.
However, it was almost immediately transferred to a detention center in a private room at the General Hospital of Police in Bangkok for health reasons and never spent one night in a cell.
His transfer and the moment of his return, which coincided with his The Pheu Thai party forming a new governmentFood public suspicions of a rear-shop and special treatment allegations.
The Thailand medical council said that its ethics committee had voted to suspend two doctors involved in the issuance of medical certificates for the former Primeter, citing differences between their reports and its real state.
“This is a consequence of professional work lower than normal,” said the council vice-president Prasit Watanapa, to journalists after the meeting.
He said that a third doctor who was involved in “serious consequences”, will receive a warning letter.
“It is indeed a very severe punishment for all doctors,” he added, without saying how long the suspensions would last.
The disciplinary decision will be submitted to the Minister of Public Health for final approval.
