Louisville, Ky. – Sovereignty won the 151st Kentucky Derby race in Churchill Downs on Saturday, winning the 1-1 / 4 mile race in 2: 02.31 and beating favorite journalism on the section.
The foal formed by Bill Mott broke out from the 16th door. He stayed in the race early while Citizen Bull put a quick pace at the start of the muddy track.
Mounted by Alvarado Junior, sovereignty broke out to get out of the last lap and was neck and neck with journalism before moving away.
Victory is the first for Alvarado and the owner Godolphin LLC in the classic race. This is the second for Mott, who won in 2019 with Country House after the maximum security was repressed for interference.
Leaving a second place allowing Florida Derby de Gulfstream Park, sovereignty paid $ 17.96, $ 7.50 and $ 5.58. Journalism paid $ 4.94 and $ 3.70 and Baeza paid $ 8.38 to show.
Unlike Friday, when serious weather conditions briefly crossed the region around Churchill Downs and delayed races, including the Kentucky OAKS race, there was no problem on Saturday. However, the stable rains on fresh spring day in Louisville led to a sloppy track.
