More images of an emblematic aircraft of the US Navy which were sunk in the Pacific Ocean during the Second World War were released, only a few days after a crew said that they found a military vehicle inside the ship.
Noaa Ocean Exploration sent a remote remote camera inside USS Yorktown on April 19 and 20, the agency said in a press release. The 806-foot long aircraft carrier, nicknamed the “Fighting Lady”, played a huge role in the Pacific country campaign during the Second World War before it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the Midway Battle In June 1942. The mission was the first to focus on the semi -seizure of the ship.
The most surprising discovery was the very first discovery of underwater planes that had stolen from the Battlefield halfwaySaid Noaa. The previous missions investigated ships that participated in the battle, but diving on April 20 found planes that had engaged in air and sea battle.
At least three planes were located in the rear elevator n ° 3 of the USS Yorktown during the dive on April 20, including an SBD without overturned Dauntless which was still armed with a bomb mounted on the underside of the plane. / Credit: Exploration of the Noaa Ocean
At least three Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers were found on the hanger bridge. An aircraft was always fully armed, with a secure bomb in its liberation cradle. This plane was probably part of a reserve force, said Noaa.
The other two planes were damaged in combat. It is believed that they are part of the USS Enterprise bombing squadron, which landed on the USS Yorktown after a successful attack on a Japanese carrier ship. The files show that the seriously damaged planes were moved to the Hangar bridge and set fire when three enemy bombs hit USS Yorktown, the Noaa said. Research to confirm the planes is underway.

The remote camera has also identified several airplane wings in the Hangar bridge. These were probably spare parts, said the Noaa. One of the wings of the aircraft was first pictured during an expedition in 2023.
Another discovery presented in the new images is a wall painting painted by hand in one of the vessels of the ship.

The mural, “a table of the USS Yorktown cruises”, had been partially visible in the historic photographs taken before the shipwreck, but has not been seen since. The 42 feet per 12 feet wall follows Yorktown's trips around the world.
The remote camera has been able to show the complex details painted in the wall.

The NOAA has also found marine life in the sinking, including colorful red jellyfish which can be members of a new species. Tube storms and anemones have also been identified.

The wreck of the USS Yorktown is protected and managed by the Naval History and Heritage Command, said the NOAA. It serves as Rest place for hundreds of soldiers who were aboard the ship when he sank. It was the remote vehicle diving site exploited since its discovery and documented in 1998.
More than 3,400 people were killed in the Battle of Midway. Three hundred and sixty-two American soldiers died, according to the National Museum of World WarAnd the vast majority of victims were members of the Japanese service. Japanese forces have lost four aircraft carriers, a cruiser and hundreds of planes, while the United States has lost a carrier, a destroyer and dozens of planes.
