The political scene of Poland is moving towards an uncertain future, with a lot of at stake in the next presidential elections. The precursor of the Civic Party of Donald Tusk, Rafal Trzaskowski, is currently in the lead, with an average estimated at 38.3% in the polls.
Following Trzaskowski is the independent candidate Karol Nawrocki, approved by the Party in law and judge of the president in office Andrzej Duda. In short in February, Nawrocki was in 3rd place in the polls, beaten by the far -right candidate of Konfederacja Slawomir Mentzen. Mentzen is particularly popular with young voters and has increased support on social networks, especially Tiktok.
Well behind the three main candidates is the Marshall of Sejm Szymon Holownia, whose centrist Third Way Coalition won 14.5% of the votes during the 2023 legislative elections, allowing the current management coalition to guarantee a majority in Parliament.
The two candidates on the left, Magdalena Biejat and Adrian Zandberg, interview an average of 2.7% and 1.8% respectively.
The elections will be an essential moment for the current leadership coalition of Poland in Parliament which has struggled to promulgate reforms in the face of the conservative opposition of the outgoing president Andrzej Duda, who is currently serving his second term and is therefore not eligible for re -election.
The election results will thus determine the capacity of the coalition government in place to make crucial decisions concerning the country's key issues: including social issues such as civil partnerships and abortion rights, but also migration and national defense.
The last presidential elections led to a tight victory for Duda against the current Precursor Trzaskowski, and many expected the current elections to be a race of two men. However, the rise of Mentzen in the polls transformed the political landscape of Poland, making him a competitive challenger in Nawrocki.
The first round of the presidential elections will take place on May 18. Following their conclusion, the results will be published by the National Electoral Commission. If no candidate obtains at least 50% of the vote, a second round will take place on June 1. The winner will serve for a five -year term, after which they will be eligible to present themselves for a second term. The elected president will take office before a joint session of the SEJM and the Senate on August 6.
