Berlin (AP) – The German police police arrested five French people on Sunday and a Belgian who had tried to climb the famous cathedral of the city.
Police said they were informed by private church security agents who spotted young climbers with headlights on their surveillance cameras in the middle of the night.
The police officers of anti-riot equipment surrounded the cathedral and a helicopter hovered over the north of the dome, until the five climbers were held inside the stairwell of the tower. Authorities said men were aged 18 to 27, the woman was 26 years old. Their identities were not revealed in accordance with the German confidentiality rules.
The police confiscated a camera, a mobile phone and a choice of locking. During their search for the building, they discovered several doors which had apparently been broken and backpacks containing climbing equipment.
The double dome cathedral is a tourist attraction and one of the oldest and most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in northern Europe. It is considered the most famous house of worship in Germany.
