BIgger ballerinas and unconventional gender pairs are the future of the art form, said the new chief of the Royal Ballet School in his first interview since he was taken care of.
Iain Mackay, artistic director of the school, said that the studios focused on strength -based training for both sexes while the ballet was moving away from the “thin” female match of the classic ballet repertoire.
“The public wants dancers they can identify with,” said Mackay, when asked if it included more size ballerinas on the main steps. “Absolutely … I think it already happens. They have been forced to be more physical than ever. Dancers who can tell a story, but dancers who are incredibly technically capable.”
