Beijing: Nine people died and 70 were hospitalized after strong winds caused boats carrying tourists to capsize in a picturesque location in southwest China, the media announced on Monday, May 5.

Travelers' boats overturned on Sunday afternoon on a river in the city of Qianxi, Guizhou province, broadcaster of the CCTV broadcast, sending 84 people in the waters.

On Monday morning, nine died, 70 were hospitalized and four were unharmed, the media said. We remain missing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged “total efforts” in research and rescue operations and the treatment of the injured, said the press agency, Xinhua.

XI “also stressed the importance of strengthening safety measures in tourist attractions” and other “major public sites”, said the agency.

According to State Media, Deputy Prime Minister Zhang Guoqing was sent to the scene to supervise the rescue efforts.

An investigation revealed that the boats were not overloaded with passengers, the video surveillance said.

Sunday’s incident comes just over two months after 11 people were killed in a boats collision in central China.

The accident in the Hunan province occurred when a passenger boat hit an industrial ship, throwing 19 people over board.
