Sheffield, England (AP) – A rare perfect break of 147 at the World Snooker Championship won a lucky fan of 25,000 pounds ($ 33,000) on Friday.
However, Brian Nicholls' experience came with a twist.
For the championship this year at the Crucible Theater, a random member of the public is chosen each session to be the recipient of the cash price if a player finish a maximum break – 15 red, each followed by 15 blacks, then of all colors.
Nicholls was the elected fan but he was sitting on one side of the crucible, watching a match between Mark Williams and Hossein Vafaei, while Mark Allen compiled his 147 on the other table.
With the two tables separated by a score, Nicholls had to look on one of the screens inside the arena while Allen ended his maximum. TV images have shown that Nicholls celebrating after the 39 -year -old man in Northern Ireland has marked the latest black to record only the 15th 147 made to the crucible.
The money earned by Nicholls is more than given to the first round losers in the world championship. They receive 20,000 pounds ($ 26,600) each.
As for Allen, it is online to get nearly $ 60,000 for having made a 147.
According to the BBC, which broadcasts the tournament, Nicholls had never gone to the crucible before and was bought a ticket by his son as a gift for his 75th anniversary.
