To the editor: Naloxone, the generic name of Narcan, can reverse opioid overdoses in a few minutes (“Newsom puts $ 24 of generic narcan at the disposal of all Californians,»April 21). This is a timely problem because, as mentioned in the article, the opioid crisis has taken lives at an alarming rate. Although we are not sure why the overdose rate of opioids has decreased, preliminary research shows that access to naloxone is essential to the decrease in mortality.
As a public health student working in the reduction of misdeeds, I see this as an essential step forward. (The governor of California Gavin) Newsom has already placed naloxone in schools and signed a bill that requires workplace to carry the medication. When someone overdose, every second counts. They cannot breathe and naloxone can make the difference between life and death. This policy is not only great – she lives life.
