To the editor: Southern California looks the most smogggy in the country (“Los Angeles remains the most smoked city in the nation for the 25th time in 26 years, despite progress”, “ April 23). The human assessment of SMOG is not only figures in a graph – they are children on the inhalers, the elders rushed to the emergency room and were interrupted.
Local and state leaders must reach the moment. The air quality management district of the south coast can carry out rules for transition from houses to clean and efficient electric heat pumps and water heaters. These rules, associated with incentives, can help transform our air smoggy.
The AQMD should not allow fossil fuel interests to oppose pure air. Pass solid rules to get the pollution out of our homes and specific to the air in our lungs.

To the publisher: It is good that we, as a company, continue to demand better air quality. I am one of those readers who grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 1950s and 60s when Smog was incomparably worse. No need for instruments then detect ozone – its soft smell was obvious.
With so much pessimism about the world, it is important to remember and remind young readers that things can improve.
