To the editor: We cannot change the geography of our city, which requires relying on trucks and cars as a backbone for the circulation of people, goods and services. The current strategy to simply fill in hen nests is like trying to put a dressing on a cut that requires a tourniquet (“Do not let the mayor's budget aggravate our streets,” May 7). There are many streets with high traffic that require a complete replacement. Attacking our roads and sidewalks for the benefit of all Angelenos should be a job.

To the editor: One of my friends has lived at her house in the Miracle Mile district for over 50 years. One day, she received a letter from a lawyer declaring that her client stumbled on the sidewalk in front of his house and continued the injuries he suffered. She hired an entrepreneur to repair the sidewalk and was assured that no permit was necessary. Then she obtained a city ticket to repair the sidewalk without a license! This is a situation without gain.
