To the publisher: Wolves are hardly an old enemy (“Beautiful, deadly: the Wolves Stalk Rural California,” April 21). It is animals that keep other wild animals under control and balance. They help protect the little wild nature that we have left and keep it wild and prosper. Of course, where people live, work and agitate, wolves often have a bad reputation. But they are vital for a flourishing ecosystem. Biologists still discover how much there is to learn what they really do for fauna, ecosystem and for us.

To the editor: I read with interest your article on wolf predations. Nowhere is only mentioned in Colorado and other places, certain dog breeds can protect cattle. The breeds such as the Pyrenees, the Anatolian and Akbash are large powerful dogs and if you have a certain number (we might not be enough to push an attack from several wolves), they can be very effective in protecting cattle.
