To the editor: In 2016, I worked in a polling station in Irvine. I was previously in favor of the obligation to prove citizenship to vote, but experience gave me another perspective (“Most Californians prefer to prove citizenship to vote, survey conclusions”, “ May 9).
In some cases, when we tried to check a person's vote status on the registration table, there was a delay. Some people in the voting line would begin to make comments designed to provoke a reaction, such as “you better check your eligibility” and “do she have the” good “identity document?” ” It was uncomfortable, somewhat threatening and, from what I saw, disrupted the global appreciation that the public had for the voting process.
If we could not confirm the eligibility for the vote of the person depending on the residence, citizenship or other factors, we then provided them with provisional voting ballots which were placed in a separate Urnerie. At 10 p.m., they were transported to the voters registrar for confirmation. The process was simple and respectful, and kept people online to try to determine if the person was eligible to vote.
