Letters to the publisher: a defense of the Tulsa zoo while the last two elephants of the zoo move in Oklahoma

To the publisher: As a former resident of Los Angeles and a native of Tlsan, I was afflicted to read that the member of the Los Angeles Bob Blumenfield Council thinks that the sending of elephants Billy and Tina to our Tulsa Zoo is a bad idea (“The last two elephants leave the zoo after years of controversy. But their new home is the subject of debate “,” April 22). He could come to Tulsa and consult the zoo before giving such an opinion!

We tulsans like our zoo, especially elephants. This year, the zoo has opened a new barn of 36,650 square feet and added about 2 acres of dedicated garden space. He also recently opened the old elephant exhibition as an elephant experience. The changes include a vast renovation of the elephant barn, the interpretation center and the outdoor spaces which originally opened in 1995. A new reserve, which adds 10 additional acres, will be ready to explore this summer.

Billy and Tina will be welcome, and they will love to live in our Tulsa zoo.

Suzanne Rausch, Tulsa, Oklasa.
