To the editor: All these many faithful of life and times of the white -headed pygargues Jackie and Shadow and their faithful attempts to bring off offense in this cruel world are delighted to know and even to see the progress of their chicks now named (“Meet Sunny and Gizmo, the new residents of the Big Bear White Head Pygargue,»April 2). It is something to applaud in a dark political period, when a large part of our natural world is intensely disputed by the financial cuts of the administration to the services which try to respond to the serious concerns of the loss of biodiversity, climate change and the misdeeds of great agriculture on our stressed land, water and air resources.
It is tempting to fall into fatalism when it comes to recognizing that most of our current practices are not durable and that the hope that these immediate flagrant needs will not only be treated, but will be deliberately ignored by our legislature. Most people in the population who are deeply careful about these questions and support measurable changes in these areas and support solid conservation and scientific research which continue to continue to plead with our government officials that our votes will have in the next elections.
Meanwhile, the good news of the name of white head chicks could encourage young people to join this fight for a better future for all large and small creatures and for our Earth in danger itself.
