To the publisher: I am deeply concerned about the proposal of mayor Karen Bass aimed at eliminating the Department of Youth Development (“Mayor Bass seeks to find the department serving the young people of the city”, “ May 1). This department plays an essential role in supporting young people in our city through programs such as the Youth Council, the Youth Summit and the Youth Exhibition, which offer essential opportunities for civic engagement, employment and personal development. The dismantling of this department could considerably reduce services for young Angelenos, in particular those of poorly served communities.
Although I understand the city's need to respond to a substantial budget deficit, targeting a department that invests directly in our future generations seems counterproductive. The consolidation of services to young people in wider agencies can dilute their effectiveness and ignore the unique needs of our young people. I urge the city officials to reconsider this decision and prioritize the well-being and development of our young residents.
