To the editor: The title, “Another painful crisis asked us: can Los Angeles achieve great things again ?, (April 3)”, captures the challenge of Patt Morrison. It cites the convergence of fires. The budget hole of $ 1 billion. Climate change. Winds screaming opposite of the Trump presidency. It refers to the absence of a committee of 25 and alludes to the void left by the death of the legendary Eli Broad.

I am wholeheartedly at the heart of his argument: “Los Angeles is designed not to work.” As she says with precision, our mayor system, unlike the New York mayor system, does not provide our mayor powers on health and social protection and social protection programs. Because ours is a lower system, it is more difficult for any mayor to get things done.

Despite the challenges, under the direction of mayor Karen Bass, and because of his deep commitment, our housing without housing has been reduced by 10%. The homicide rate is down 14%. His most important appointment to date is the police chief. Unsurprisingly, Jim McDonnell, a deeply respected professional, turned out to be a great choice. The rate of reconstruction in the devastated Pacific palisades, according to most accounts, compares favorably to similar reconstruction efforts of devastated areas elsewhere. I am grateful.

I do not know any other mayor of Los Angeles – and I closely followed the quarries of six – which can equal its experience in the national and national government, where it was a speaker of the State Assembly of California and member of the Congress of the United States. She was president of the black caucus. For a good reason, she was quite high on the list of vice-presidents prospects when Joe Biden selected her first package.

Bass now serves us with determination, insight and competence. As she sails in the world of federal and state cooperation and assistance, our city is better for that.
