Sovereignty beat favorite journalism to win the Kentucky Derby 151st in Churchill Downs.
The foal, mounted by the Junior Alvarado and driven by Bill Mott, finished the flat race for one and a quarter in two minutes and 02.31 second to beat journalism with a length and a half.
Citizen Bull fixed the early pace on the muddy track, before sovereignty and journalism were emerging at the front before the last section.
But the sovereignty of 7-1 Third choice moved away to win the victory in front of 147,046 spectators.
“Fortunately, there was a lot of speed in the race,” said Mott.
“It installed us well because they had an honest rhythm. When you have a good pace, the terrain spreads a little more, and it offers you the opportunity to pass once they line up a little.
“It gives external horses a chance, and that's what happened.”
Victory is the first for Alvarado and the owner Godolphin in the classic race, while it is the second for Mott, who won in 2019 with Country House after the maximum security was repressed for interference.
The victory crowned 24 hours brilliant for the Godolphin team from Sheikh Mohammed, who also won the Kentucky Oaks with good humor and the 2000 Guinea in Newmarket with the ruling court.
American Gymnast Simone Biles, winner of seven Olympic gold medals, carried out the traditional signaling of `Cavaliers '' before signaling to runners to mount their horses.
The role, given to celebrities and athletes, was played by the personality of television Martha Stewart, the star of NFL Patrick Mahomes and singer Jack Harlow in recent years.
Journalism, mounted by Umberto Rispoli, left as a 3-1 favorite after winning its last four departures – although none of these victories was obtained on the mud.
“I know most people are disappointed,” said Rispoli.
“On a fair track, I think I have the best horse.”
Serious weather conditions had delayed races on Friday and, although there were no such problems on Saturday, new rains led to muddy conditions for the derby.
