The United States has become one of the main exporters of a popular cooking and heating gas: propane.
However, America's position could be in danger while the trade war with China is raging. China, Japan and Mexico are frequent mooring destinations for VLGCs, or very large gas carriers, filled with propane.
The country's banks and pipelines saw 57 million propane barrels in January of this year, according to the Energy Information Administration. China represents 12 million, or just more than a fifth of American exports in January.
“China depends very on the United States for its propane, and because it wants to make certain sectors of its economy, in particular the chemical sector, more competitive,” said Rebecca Harding, CEO of economic security of the Center for Economic. “It will need us propane to be able to do it.”
Several American companies are expanding the capacity to support the growing demand for the country's exports. One of them is enterprise Products Partners, and this suggests that prices cannot destroy business.
“They all ask for more. So our quays are complete, and I think they will remain in this way,” said the co-PDG of the partners of Enterprise Jim Teague.
