Glengoyne White Oak 24 is one of the best new whiskeys

Welcome Taste test,, Where every week our criticism Jonas Flicker Explore the most worthy and interesting whiskeys in the world. Come back every Sunday for his last Whiskey review.

When it comes to whiskeyI like to be surprised (in other situations, however, it really depends on the surprise). I tasted a lot of whiskey (and whiskey) for my work, but of course, there are still brands and distilleries that I know less. One of them is GlengoyneWhat has made even more exciting to discover how the distillery’s new white oak is 24 years old in the distillery, and how different it is from what it usually does.

Glengoyne has a long history that dates back to 1833, and the distillery claims to have the longest distillation process – which means extended contact with copper and in turn more fruity notes on the palate. Like the Macallan and the GlendronachGlengoyne is known to age his whiskey in seasoned sherry barrels which he gets in Spain. But there is aging whiskey in other types of barrels in the distillery warehouses, and for some time ago depending on the age of this new version. The expression of white oak nucleus is an ageless declaration single malt which was matured in bourbon barrels on the first thread and slightly charred virgin oak barrels, which was a first for the distillery. The majority of what is in the bottle aged in the barrels of Bourbon, the virgin oak used more as an accent due to the powerful impact of this type of maturation on the flavor of a whiskey.

The same formula, more or less, is used for the new limited edition, an expression of 24 years, and the results are fantastic. Age is not everything in whiskey, of course, but this bottle goes beyond basic expression by a large margin. The absence of sherry barrels in the maturation process means that instead of dried fruits and heavy spices in the mouth, you will find notes of vanilla, green apple, honey, dark chocolate and milk, and lighter cooking spices such as cinnamon. There is a healthy dose of tropical fruit here, something that is commonly found in a Scotch Whiskey this old man, but he is relatively subtle and does not overcome the procedure. The oak neither, even after almost 25 years, although this small amount of virgin oak barrels in the mixture adds a touch of vibrating wood to the flavor profile.

Overall, it's just a fantastic whiskey of a distillery that has stolen a bit under the radar for me, which I think could also be the case for others. If you are not an ordinary Glengoyne drinker, take out and try this whiskey, and compare it to the base range of Sherry Multied to see how different it is if you can. And if you are a real one that has been dedicated to the cause of Glengoyne for some time, you will appreciate the change of direction that this new whiskey takes.
