Four children were killed and several others were injured when a car crashed into a camp building after school on Monday afternoon in a city outside Springfield, Illinois, police announced.

According to local authorities, the police responded around 3:20 p.m. (10:30 p.m. CET) to call a vehicle by fatally hitting three people outside, hitting the building, then hitting another person before leaving the other side, said the chief of the Chatham police department, chief Scott Tarter.

People killed were between 4 and 18 years old, the state of Illinois said in a statement sent by email.

Several other people were injured and taken to hospitals, police said.

The driver, who was not injured, was the only occupant of the vehicle and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Illinois state police have not said whether the driver had been arrested or placed in police custody.
