You can fight fire with fire, even in flammable forests in the western United States.
According to an analysis of the California record fire season, intentionally burning lands can reduce the severity and quantity of smoke from forest fires that burn these areas later, even when the smoke of intentional fires is taken into account. “We show that there is a clear advantage,” says Kelp Makoto at the University of Stanford in California.
