Denmark summoned the best American diplomat in the country Thursday after an article published in the Wall Street Journal reported that Washington had intensified its information collection efforts in Greenland.
Jennifer Hall Godfrey, the actor's actor in the United States Embassy in Copenhagen, met the Danish Danish diplomat Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen at the Danish Foreign Ministry after the newspaper’s article on Tuesday, the ministry said in an email.
The document reported that several senior American civil servants serving under the director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard had “published a message of the accent of the collection '' to the heads of intelligence”, who were then responsible for looking into the movement of independence of Greenland and to examine the feeling around the extraction of American resources on Danish territory.
Addressing public broadcaster Dr on Wednesday, Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that his government would summon the American diplomat to request a “refutation” or another explanation following the report.
Rasmussen, who previously scolded the Trump administration for its threats against the sovereignty of Greenland, said that the information in the report was “very worrying” and that the Danish authorities “look at this with great seriousness”.
Prime Minister Put Frederiksen told the Associated Press that “you cannot spy on an ally”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided no other details, while the United States Embassy refused to comment.
In response to the questions on the review of the journal, the Gabbard office published a statement noting that it had made three “criminal” referrals to the Ministry of Justice for leaks from the Intelligence Community and that almost a dozen additional cases of flight are the subject of an investigation.
“The Wall Street Journal should be ashamed to help the deep stakeholders seeking to undermine the president by politicizing and disclosing classified information,” wrote Gabbard.
“They break the law and undermine the security and democracy of our nation. Those who disclose classified information will be found and held responsible to the extent of the law.”
Greenlanders oppose the American takeover
The Danish territory semi-autonomous was coveted by Trump, who said that the property and control of Greenland are necessary for national security purposes.
Greenland is a home of critical raw materials and rare land, and analysts claim that the merger of the Arctic ice presents strategic opportunities for trade, energy and ever higher transport in a region where geopolitical rivals are fighting for influence.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would respect the self -determination of Greenland while saying that the Greenlanders “do not want to be part of Denmark”.
However, according to a opinion poll Released in January, 85% of Greenlanders do not want their island to be part of the United States.
The Prime Minister of Greenland said last month that the declarations of the White House on the Arctic Island rich in minerals were disrespectful, and that it “will never be, a property that can be bought by anyone”.
During a visit to the island last month, Frederiksen insisted that “you cannot annex another country”.
