Welcome Taste test,, Where every week our criticism Jonas Flicker Explore the most worthy and interesting whiskeys in the world. Come back every Sunday for his last Whiskey review.
Fewer people smoke cigarettes these days, and it's a very good thing. Fewer people also drink alcohol, and it is also a good thing based on recent medical reports (despite the irony that it is a whiskey goodbye column). This healthier new reality has not stopped the whiskey brand Lasso Motel of the release of a new bourbon It is supposed to be appreciated with smoke or two, but the good news is that it is a pleasant flow even if you are not inclined to vacuum some coffin nails.
The name of the new bourbon is darts, which is a slang term for cigarettes which seem more common among Canadians and Australians than Americans. The concept of association of a whiskey with smoking has so far been mainly relegated to the world of cigars, with many brands extinguishing expressions of mixing cigars which are often a marriage of whiskeys with a barrel designed to be appreciated while swelling on a stogy. Personally, I do not care about cigars, so while I appreciated some of these brands whiskeys like Joseph A. Magnus, Old Elk and the DalmoreI prefer not to be surrounded by a laid smoke ring while I sip.
The release of a mixture of cigarettes is almost a little a bit of Edgelord, or at least a bit like Goodnatured train fishing. Lasso Motel is a new brand – Devin Odell of Dynasty Spirits founded it last year – so it's probably a good way to attract attention (I write on this subject, so it seems to work). Her 18 -year -old American whiskey won the Best in Show Prize at the New York World Spirits Competition last fall (full disclosure, I was a judge, but we tasted everything blind), a fairly good start for a newcomer in the world of crowded whiskey.
Darts should not win a prize like this, but it is nevertheless a fairly good mix of Bourbon. It is a mixture composed of bourbon finished in three types of barrels: Armagnac, Sherry and Cognac. Whiskey has been distilled in Green River in Kentucky (which now belongs to Bardstown Bourbon Company) from a 70% corn mashbill, 21% rye and 9% malted barley, and in 100 evidence bottles. There is no age declaration, but it is probably somewhere in the range of 4 to 6 years.
I thought that the only way to try this whiskey was the way God and Philip Morris wanted, so I pulled a light from Marlboro to blow while I sipped. The three finishes in used barrels are all quite common, but the flavors each bring to the palate are balanced with notes of fig, raisin, black pepper, dried apricot and dark chocolate. It's been a while since I did not smoke a cigarette for the last time, so there was a little rush towards the head while I taste. I am not sure that a light from Marlboro has as much complexity and nuances as a fine Cuban cigar, and I would not go so far as to say that smoking improves the experience of drinking this whiskey, but it is a decent gateway to its own merits.
Thanks to its brand, Lasso Motel tries to call on darts to people who like to drink in diving bars, calling a bottle that captures “the rebellious spirit of a classic ritual of whiskey and refined cigarette for today's drinker”. It is an admirable atmosphere, but which is more suitable for a photo of Jameson Or Jim beam Rather than a “refined” bottle of $ 70 which involves the word “Armagnac”. However, I will certainly come back to darts again (in the non-smoking section this time), and I can't wait to taste everything that this brand of creative whiskey has in store.
