Joe Biden said that Ukraine’s Ukraine’s Ukraine President’s pressure from Ukraine to give in Russia is equivalent to “modern appeasement”.
During his first post-presidential interview with the BBC Today program, Biden said that he feared that relations between the United States and Europe were raising Trump, with NATO member countries against Si Washington could trust.
“Europe will lose confidence in the certainty of America and the management of America,” said Biden at the BBC.
The leaders of the continent, he added, asked: “” Can I count on the United States? Will they be there? “”
Biden was particularly worrying, said the administration’s proposal to let Russia keep Ukrainian territory in order to conclude a peace agreement.
“This is modern appeasement,” said Biden.
Biden said that Trump's lurid argument with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the oval office in February was “under America”.
“I do not understand how they do not understand that there is force in the alliances,” said Biden about the Trump administration on Monday.
The term “appeasement” refers to the negotiations of former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain with Adolf Hitler in the 1930s while he was moving to annex and resume bordering areas in Germany before the Second World War.
Chamberlain has notoriously proclaimed the resulting agreement as a warning sign of “Peace for our time” in September 1938.
Nazi Germany invaded Poland less than a year later, starting what would become the most devastating conflict that Europe has ever seen.
Trump said on the campaign track that he could end the war launched by Russia's large -scale invasion in a few days, and has long rejected conflict as waste both lives and money from American taxpayers.
But depending on, his approach to negotiating a fighting of fighting was irregular.
At the start of his presidency, he ordered a break in American aid to Ukraine before resuming it.
Last week, his administration signed an agreement with kyiv granting access to the United States to the vast mineral resources of Ukraine-a return on investment, suggested Trump, who could open the way to greater aid in the United States in Ukraine.
Trump also said that Crimea, who was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, “will remain with Russia”, apparently rejecting the fundamental demand from Ukraine that Russia returns all territory that it has seized since he attacked the country for the first time.
Leave the judge in history
Biden also told the BBC that Trump's statements on the acquisition of Panama, Greenland and Canada had increased mistrust of the United States in Europe.
“What president is talking like that?” Said biden. “It is not who we are. We are on freedom, democracy, the opportunity – not confiscation.”
He also said that it was a “difficult decision” to leave the 2024 presidential race four months before the day of the November 2024 election to allow former vice-president Kamala Harris to challenge Trump instead of him.
But he also insisted that backing earlier, because some criticisms suggest that he should have done so, would have made no difference.
Asked about the triumphant celebration of Trump from his first 100 days in power, meanwhile, Biden replied that he belongs to the story to judge his successor.
“I don't see anything triumphant,” he said.
