Based scientific research in Harvard and other colleges is a threat to American exceptionalism

To the editor: As a scientist and former Harvard student, I was deeply alarmed to read “The Trump administration fixes $ 2.2 billion in subsidies in Harvard on campus activism,(April 14). Our nation is a superpower due to the progress of scientific research that has been carried out over the past 100 years, in particular the post-secret world war. As most of this research has been carried out in universities, funding will harm our nation a lot because a large part of our national security, our economy and our well-being will depend on science.

Universities also form the next generation of scientists and engineers. The restraint of funding for universities due to certain demonstrators (many of whom were not even students) is like using a hammer to kill a mosquito and will only worsen anti -Semitism. This will also harm science at a time when we desperately need to innovate our economy, clean our environment, mitigate climatic threats, guarantee natural resources and consolidate our defense to remain a superpower.

Although we need to reform the financing of science to make it more fair among universities, allow refutations to the examination of anonymous peers and to be less opposed to risk in the financing of research outside the box, canceling the financing of universities is simply false.

Please, Mr. President, do not destroy American science. This is, more than anything, which has made great America and will allow America to compete for a prosperous future.
