Tremaine dance conventions and competitions Started as a dream: a dream of sharing new training techniques and fresh equipment taught in big cities like Los Angeles and New York with dance students across the country. President and co-founder Dr. Joe Tremaine (Which received an honorary doctorate from the University of Arizona) has a long history of work with the best of the company – as a dancer, choreographer and educator. (He worked with a list of star artists, notably Paula Abdul, Gregory Hines, Gene Kelly and Barbara Streisand, to name just a few.) In the 1970s, Tremaine opened the Joe Tremaine Dance Center in Los Angeles and in 1981, he decided to extend his commitment to higher training. Tremaine launched a downside in her car and has taken the road, making her dream of offering new classes, instructors and ideas across the country-producing better access to a pre-internet era and establishing many standards of the congress industry that young artists know and love today.
Now in her 44th season, Tremaine Dance Conventions & Competitions is much larger than an individual spectacle: with a list of renowned teachers, a tour of 26 cities each year and a large audience of dancers on a national scale, Tremaine continues to rely on her heritage of being an influential voice in the education of dance today.
Tremaine is for life
Executive producer Terry Lindholm Puts Tremaine for the first time as a young dancer. He attended a Trentemaine Convention and received a scholarship to train at the Joe Tremaine Dance Center. Shortly after, Lindholm joined the Faculty of Convention Tremaine and taught for more than a decade. He also had a performance career working with Reba Mcentire and in the film Knotsas well as three Oscar appearances before opening its own talent agency. After staying close to Tremaine over the years, Lindholm returned to the organization as an executive producer during the pandemic.
“It's a family at Tremaine,” says Lindholm. “It has always been a great support base.” As he went from the student to the interpreter via the teacher in producer, Lindholm built a large network made up of the people he met along the way. “The construction of a professional career is a question of relationships,” he says – and Trema's relationships are for life.
In fact, many members of the faculty of the organization grew up in the Tremaine training: commercial dancer Tiffany Maher was the teenage dancer of the year 2004 of Tremaine; Keri LagrandDirector TREMANE PERFORMANCE COMPANY, studied at the Joe Tremaine Dance Center; and Emmy winning choreographer Josh BergasseWho joined the faculty this year, attended each year in Tremaine competitions and conventions with his mother, who grew up with the co-founder of Tremaine Julie Adler.
Fundamental values
Forty-four years ago, Tremaine founded its organization with the philosophy “Dance Training Is Life Training”, a motto which is still the heart of Tremaine today. Beyond the technique, dancers are encouraged to push themselves and take risks during conventions and competitions. They have the opportunity to experiment and be inspired by the dancers around them. And the competition from Tremaine allows young dancers to learn the precious lesson in failure graciously because it only awards the first in fourth place, understanding that there is value in the process – not simply by winning.
Tremaine understands that many dancers who attend the conventions will not continue the dance professionally, but the organization believes that the lessons they teach through dance will benefit them in any path they choose. Lindholm is a clear example, in progress to be a successful agent after studying and played for years. Other former Tremaine dancers have become lawyers, directors, actors, etc. Intensify Actress Jenna Dewan and director Anne Fletcher.
Beyond dance lessons, Tremaine offers forums and questions and answers for parents, teachers and students on subjects like entering the professional world, going to university and use social media to wisdom. The teachers give back by sharing advice from the industry to help dancers take their next steps in their training and their career.

This seasonTremaine added to her diverse list of teachers with new arrivals from various styles, including Bergasse, who choreographed on Broadway Smash; Rhonda MillerWho is the creator and former director of the BFA commercial dance program at PACE University and is the current director of the new commercial training program for Tremaine Dance / Rhonda Miller based in Los Angeles; And “so you think you can dance” season 6 star Jakob Karr. But at Tremaine, it is much more than simply bringing choreographers and dancers of the big name. All teachers are educators created passionate about students. “They are doing a very good job to go down to the ground to see and interact with the dancers,” explains Lindholm. The faculty leaves dancers who feel inspired to go home and work harder – in any discipline they choose – continuing to pursue the heritage of Tremaine de Tremaine to educate the next generation of leaders.
