Are you looking to spend more time with port authority? Now there is a theater.

Spending a night at the port authority for port authority is the last thing that many New Yorkers want to do. But there is a new reason to reconsider: hidden behind an unmarked door between an Irish pub and a Dunkin 'Donuts in the south wing is the Hidden Jewel Box Theater, which has quietly sells shows since last October.

“When people enter, they are so amazed,” said Angela Harriell, director of The Love Show NYCA theatrical dance troupe based in space. “They say things like:” I did so much in New York, but it's completely different. This is the most New York thing in New York. »»

The place, which can accommodate around 40 people, was once a Ms. Fields cookie store and has existed as a performance space in the past five years. In 2021, the organization of non -profit arts Chashama – which works to provide affordable workspaces for visual artists – has transformed the window into a performance space that has been completed and visible to the largest terminal.

After losing his studio space in Bushwick last year, Hariell sought to rebuild the love show in Port Authority and transform the space once again, this time in a closed theater.

By working with a budget that she described as “shoestring”, she bought used curtains and chairs, transforming the space of 688 square feet into a hidden jewelry box. She describes her aesthetic as a “situation of Disco Rococo Summer from midnight”.

In October, The Love Show had its first performance at the Jewel Box – a “A Kill Bill Ballet” inspired by Quentin Tarantino – which sold, just like the seven performance of Love Show. The jewelry box also organized a variety of shows from other groups and artists, as well as courses, workshops, table readings and meetings.

The place exists due to Chashama subsidies and the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the arrangement depends on the remaining vacant space, said Hariell. This could change if a large retailer should express his interest in praising the space.

The Love Show is preparing for a performance by “Gl'amour: an enticing cabaret experience” at the end of next month. Tickets are around $ 45 and available online purchase.
