NEW YORK: THE Whiting Foundation announced the winners of 2025 for the 40th anniversary of the Shitty price. Among the 10 writers honored for fiction, non-fiction, poetry and theater, Liza Birkenmeier was awarded for the theater, receiving $ 50,000. The prices are designed to recognize excellence and promise in a range of emerging talents, giving most winners the opportunity to devote themselves full time to their own writing, or to take new daring risks in their work.
A declaration on the pieces of Birkenmeier indicates that they “begin like languid hangouts and are transformed into an absurd supercollider full of voids and spaces … Melancholy and incisive, its playing pieces are great ideas inside the fragments of syncopated cats which capture music of our way of thinking and speaking.”

The ceremony this evening included an opening speech by the winner of Whiting Award 2016 Ocean Vuong and the appearances of former colleagues winner of the Whiting Prize. For drama, James IjamesWho received the prize in 2017, shared remarks and awarded the prize to Birkenmeier.
