WASHINGTON, DC: DC Theatre Arts (DCTA) announced that its editor and publisher, Nicole Hertvik, will step down on December 31 after seven years in the role. DC Theater Arts is the only nonprofit media outlet in Washington, DC dedicated to comprehensive coverage of the theater community. Last year, they published more than 700 reviews, interviews, and news articles, many of which focused on the region’s small theaters.

In addition to publishing and editing DC Theater Arts, Hertvik contributes to several publications in the DC area and beyond, including American TheatreNicole studied international affairs at Columbia University and journalism at Georgetown University. She was a 2019 National Critics Institute Fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and a 2022 Entrepreneurial Journalism Fellow at CUNY. Her reporting for DC Theater Arts was a 2023 finalist for the Society of Professional Journalists’ Best of DC Dateline Awards.

DCTA was founded by Joel Markowitz in 2012. After his passing in 2017, Hertvik took over as editor and publisher. In 2022, she led the organization to reincorporate as a nonprofit. In 2023, Washington City Journal Voters named DCTA the best nonprofit arts organization in the DC area, and their coverage of the impact of the COVID outbreak on the local theater community was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists in the category of Outstanding Online Reporting.

The board, staff and advisory committee are exploring options for keeping the site operating after Hertvik leaves.
