April 28 (UPI) – The US Energy Ministry announced on Monday that an agreement had been signed which will allow Poland to build its first AP1000 nuclear power plant.
The AP1000 is a nuclear power plant designed and produced by Westinghouse Electric. It is a pressure water reactor designed to be a lower cost.
“The agreement signed today to advance the construction of civil nuclear reactors in Poland marks an important step for two American companies, the energy security of Poland and a safer and more energetic world,” said US Energy Secretary Chris Wright In an article on X Monday.
Wright joined the Westinghouse / Bechtel consortium, or WBC, Polish nuclear power plants, or Pej, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for the signing of the engineering development agreementor EDA. EDA is part of a wider nuclear security agreement worth tens of billions of dollars to build large -scale civilian nuclear reactors in Poland.
The project could possibly allow up to six AP1000 on two sites.
Wright said that the agreement “will provide huge energy security levels in Poland and create tens of thousands of Polish and American jobs”, and “also marks the start of long-term nuclear cooperation between the United States and Poland, which will result in the construction of future reactors”.
The EDA allows you to build an AP1000 Westinghouse Westinghouse by Bechtel in the Pomeranian province of Poland, and it would create nearly 40,000 related jobs. Construction should start at some point in 2026.
