Adam Vesperman goes from “Billy Elliot” to the world tour

At 11, Adam Vesperman was inaugurated in an impromptu hearing for Billy Elliot: the musical In a dance explosion on the west coast. Despite an interpretation outside the key to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”, his strong dance skills provided him with a reminder. After a few days of intense hearing in New York, Vesperman won the role in the West End of London, launching the professional dance career that he has continued since.

Having grown up in Kent, Washington, Vesperman began to dance at the age of 8 at the Allegro Performing Arts Academy. After reserving the role of Billy, he moved to London for two years, where he quickly learned the game and played in production. “It was the coolest experience of my life and one of the best work I have ever done,” explains Vesperman.

At 14, he returned to Washington, where he met formative mentors and commercial choreographers, including Tessandra Chavez and Kyle Hanagami. While the school ended, Vesperman had not initially planned the university. But, after having received a scholarship at the Gloraa Kaufman School of Dance of the University of Southern California, he moved to Los Angeles, where he balanced his university workload with his budding commercial career.

“I remember helping Kyle Hanagami in the residence of Britney Spears Domination during the finals week,” explains Vesperman. “Each break in rehearsal, I would remove my laptop to write a paper on the side, just trying to make it work.”

And make it work, he did. Vesperman obtained his diploma in 2020 with a BFA in dance and a minor in an occupational therapy, and worked with eminent artists, notably Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Karol G, Phoebe Bridgers and Sia. More recently, he finished a tour with Sabrina Carpenter.

We have caught up with him to find out more about his trip and her life on tour.

“The industry is so futile and ephemeral. One day, I will receive four availability checks, and a week later, none of them has crossed. To manage rejection, I try not to build the project in my mind. I stay in the present. I respond to emails without putting too much weight.

On the advice to reserve jobs

“Get out in the world, meet people and transform your community. I reserved my first big tour because I took a Corepower class with the assistant of the choreographer. Networking is so important these days. These are really who you know and how you present yourself, which can be difficult because it is anxious for so many people, including me. But it is the reality of the industry.

“Think about how you use social media and energy and aesthetics you project. Having hired is rarely about your dance skills – you have to be someone that people like to be there. Be cool, friendly, funny and someone with whom others want to work. You never know who is in the room because the is a tight community.

“And be intelligent with your resources. It should not be developed, but make a website. Mine is minimalist, but it gives people a place to see my work. ”
