A driver has plowed a car in a crowd in a street festival to celebrate the Philippine heritage Vancouver Saturday evening, killing and injuring a number of people, said officials.

“A number of people have been killed and several others were injured after a driver made a crowd in a street festival,” wrote the Vancouver police department in a Declaration on X.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m., local time said.

The vehicle driver is in detention, police said.

The videos of the organizers of the Instagram event showed animated cultural dances and song shows throughout the day, with several food trucks and market stands bordering both sides of the street.

Many families with young children have been seen among the participants.

Reuters' photos of the incident showed paramedical paramedics and ambulances on the scene, with visible police cords.

Prime Minister Mark Carney cried the dead and the wounded, calling the “horrible” kick in a Declaration on X.

“I offer my deepest condolences to relatives of those who are killed and injured, to the Philippine Canadian community and everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you, ”he wrote.

The mayor of Vancouver also offered condolences.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrible incident at the Lapu Day event today,” said Ken Sim Written on x.

“Our thoughts are with all the people affected and with the Philippine community of Vancouver during this incredibly difficult period.”
