Atlanta (AP) – US rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Friday, she will not challenge the Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia halfway up next year, offering relief for some Republicans who fear that she is too divisor to win.
In a long post On the social media platform X, Greene challenged donors and GOP consultants who fear deactivating the moderate republicans and independents necessary to beat Ossoff. But Greene said that she did not want to serve in a Senate that “does not work” and that she said is dominated by legislators hostile to Trump supporters to Trump and who does not want to shake the status quo.
“If I'm going to fight for a team, it will only be a team ready to put everything into play to save this country,” she wrote.
Ossoff, a first mandate senator, won the siege with a thin margin in a state that has always been a republican bastion but has more recently become a battlefield. It is the higher objective for the Republicans who seek to extend their vast majority to the Senate.
Popular Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who could be a great opponent for Ossoff, withdrawn of the 2026 race on Monday. His decision leaves a wide race for the appointment of the GOP.
The American representative Buddy Carter, who represents a district on the Côte de Georgie, has become the first major republican candidate to declare THURSDAY.
Six other occupants of the GOP, in addition to Greene, recognized the interest of presenting themselves to the Associated Press. They include two other Republicans at the American house, Mike Collins and Rich McCormick. Also considering the race is the Secretary of State Brad RaffenspergerCommissioner for the State of Agriculture Tyler Harper, John King State Insurance Commissioner and State Senator Greg Dolezal.
“I expect a competitive primary – the Senate seats do not often arise,” said Eric Tanenblatt, a national fundraising of the GOP and Kemp Ally who supported Trump's rivals in the presidential primaries.
Greene is known nationally and a prolific fundraising, but it has adopted conspiracy theories and argued with members of her own party. On Thursday, she spoke to journalists that she has more than 11 million social media followers, saying that it is because people know where she is.
Greene's call would be clear in a GOP primary with many voters fiercely faithful to the president. Her decision not to run one day after telling the journalists she was considering.
“I'm going to think about it, talk to my family. I am honored to have so much support from the great people of Georgia. And I have options,” she said on Thursday.
Greene was elected for the first time in the House in 2020. She initially planned to appear in a competitive district of the northern Atlanta suburbs, but moved to the 14th district much more conservative in the northwest corner of Georgia.
Greene continued to adopt conspiracies even after 11 Republicans of the Chamber joined the Democrats to withdraw her assignments from committees in February 2021. She kissed people imprisoned for accusations after January 6, 2021, a riot of the American Capitol as political prisoners, being part of her campaign to crop the narration of the attack and the Democrats, and not the Republicans that part of violence.
She was welcomed in the dominant current of the republican conference by Kevin McCarthy, who forged an alliance with her. But Greene continued to argue with the Republicans and the Democrats. House Freedom Caucus expelled Greene in 2023.
